DWG DWS-01 · DIMENSIONING SYSTEM

A dimensioning system, not just a measuring box

A single dimensioner measures parcels. A dimensioning system runs your whole inbound or outbound flow through measurement — singulation, dimensioning, weighing, scanning, sorting and conveying, engineered as one line with one data stream.

01From measuring point to measured process

Most warehouses do not have a measurement problem; they have a measurement placement problem. Parcels are measured at one bench, weighed at another, scanned at a third, and the three records are reconciled by hand at the end of the day — if they are reconciled at all. A dimensioning system removes the gaps: every parcel passes one engineered flow, and every capture happens in sequence, tied to the same barcode.

In a Goodscan dimensioning system the flow reads like the drawing above. A singulator takes bulk-fed parcels and spaces them into single file. The DWS section measures dimensions and weight in motion and reads the barcode — with a six-sided scanning tunnel where labels land on any face. The sorter then routes each parcel by the destination in its record, and conveyors carry everything between stations and out to loading, where telescopic conveyors reach into the vehicle.

02What the system records

A dimensioning system is only as useful as the record it produces. Each parcel leaves the line with a single data set that your operation can bill, audit and plan from:

  • Identity — the barcode (or codes) read at the scanning point, linked to your order or waybill number.
  • Dimensions — length, width and height from the 3D vision unit, plus computed volume.
  • Weight — actual weight from the dynamic or static weighing section, and the dimensional weight computed from your carrier's divisor.
  • Disposition — the destination the sorter acted on, with the timestamp of the pass.
  • Exception flags — unreadable codes, oversize or overweight parcels routed to a manual station instead of silently passing.
Interface details — file formats, protocols and hand-off points to WMS, TMS or carrier platforms — are defined per project during configuration, because they depend on the systems you already run. Tell us what the line must talk to and we design the data hand-off with the layout.

03When a system beats a standalone machine

A standalone static DWS is the right answer for one packing bench or a returns desk. A dimensioning system earns its place when volume makes manual handling the bottleneck: multiple induction points feeding one sort, carrier billing disputes that need a defensible record per parcel, or a hub operation where measurement, routing and loading happen in one building.

Systems are configured from the same model range as the standalone machines — GS210 and GM210 series dimensioners, GS300 pallet units, the six-sided scanning tunnel, cross-belt and wheel sorters, singulators and conveyors — so a line can start as a measuring point and grow into a full system without replacing the first machine.

FAQQuestions buyers ask

Can a dimensioning system start small and expand?
Yes. Lines are modular: a dynamic DWS with a scanning tunnel can be installed first, with singulation and sorting added as volume grows. The parcel record format stays the same across stages.
Does the system handle pallets as well as parcels?
Freight and parcels usually run on separate measuring points. A pallet dimensioner (GS300 series) covers the freight dock while parcel DWS machines cover the small-parcel flow; both feed the same reporting structure.
