02Dimensioner, DWS, cubing — the words on this site
The industry uses several words for overlapping things, and this site keeps them straight in a specific way. A dimensioner measures size — the family name for all the machines above. A DWS system adds weighing and scanning to the same capture, which is the form most logistics operations actually buy, and the form Goodscan specialises in. Cubing is the logistics trade's traditional word for the same measuring act — see the cubing system page — and a volumetric scanner is a dimensioner described by its sensing technology, covered on its own page too.
The distinction that matters commercially is never the noun; it is whether weight and identity are captured with the dimensions. A size-only record cannot settle a billing dispute. A DWS record — size, weight, barcode, timestamp — can.
03Choosing by flow, not by freight alone
Two operations with identical parcels can need different dimensioners, because the flow differs: parcels placed by hand at benches point to static and desktop units; parcels arriving on a belt point to dynamic machines; freight arriving on forklifts points to the pallet frames. The parcel dimensioner and freight dimensioner pages organise the range by those two streams, and the What is DWS guide explains the underlying capture if you are new to the category.
Budget conversations go better with the range visible as a ladder rather than a leap. The first rung — a desktop or static unit — costs a bench, not a project, and starts the record discipline immediately. Each higher rung reuses the same record format, so nothing bought early is wasted when the line grows: the static station that specified your dynamic line, from its own accumulated data, typically stays in service at a bench afterwards.
If you are writing a specification or an RFP, name the freight and the flow and let suppliers map models to it — including us. A specification that names a model before it names the parcel profile has the decision backwards, and the industry is full of dimensioners measuring the wrong stream beautifully.
