01What changes when dimensioning is automated
Manual and static dimensioning measure the parcels an operator has time to place on the machine. Automated dimensioning measures all of them. That difference matters commercially: carrier corrections are not evenly spread — they concentrate on exactly the oversize, irregular and badly labelled parcels that a sampling workflow misses. When every parcel carries your own dimension and weight record, the dispute conversation changes completely.
It also changes the labour maths. The measuring point stops being a workstation that needs staffing per shift and becomes a section of line that runs whenever the line runs, at the speed the sorter behind it demands.
02The automated measuring section, step by step
An automated dimensioning section in a Goodscan line is built from the dynamic end of the range:
- Singulation first. A singulator takes bulk-fed parcels and delivers them single file with gaps — in-motion measurement and reading both depend on that spacing.
- Dimensioning in motion. The GM210 and GS210M dynamic DWS machines capture length, width and height as the parcel crosses the measuring zone — by light curtain on the GM210Pro, by 3D vision on the GS210M.
- Weighing in motion. A dynamic weigh section under the belt records weight without stopping the parcel, synchronised with the dimension capture.
- Scanning at speed. Top reading for well-labelled flows, or a six-sided scanning tunnel where labels land anywhere — the code joins the record in the same pass.
- Decision and routing. The completed record drives the sorter downstream and is stored for billing, audit and planning.
03Where automated dimensioning earns most
Express and e-commerce hubs are the classic fit: thousands of parcels per hour, carrier billing on every one, and sortation decisions that need dimensions for load planning. 3PL operations use automated dimensioning as a billing instrument — every client's parcel measured on induction, so storage and fulfilment charges run on records, not estimates. Returns centres use it in reverse: the same capture grades incoming parcels for re-stock, re-pack or disposal routing.
If your volume is below the point where a belt line makes sense, the same data discipline still applies at bench scale — see the parcel dimensioner range and the blog comparison of static and dynamic DWS.
