Package dimensioner: every small parcel, measured

Packages — the cartons, mailers and boxed goods of the small-parcel stream — are billed on dimensional weight and audited by carriers. A package dimensioner gives every one of them a measured record at the point where you still control it.

01The package measuring problem

Packages are awkward billing objects: small enough to be handled casually, numerous enough that casual handling costs real money. A two-centimetre error on a carton is a rounding issue; the same error across a month of shipments is a five-figure correction bill. Package dimensioning exists to move the measurement from the carrier's audit line to your packing or induction point, where the same measurement also chooses the right box, the right service and the right label.

The measuring point has to match the package flow. Bench-packed packages belong on a static or desktop unit; belt-fed packages belong in front of a dynamic machine. Goodscan's package measuring points are the small end of the parcel dimensioner range, built around the GS210Y static workstation and the GS210B desktop unit.

02What a package dimensioner captures

One placement or one pass produces the complete package record:

  • True dimensions — the bounding box of the package as packed, including bulging mailers and overfilled cartons, not the nominal box size from the shelf.
  • Actual weight — captured in the same placement, so dimension and weight can never be transposed between packages.
  • Billable weight — computed on the spot from your carrier's divisor, visible to the packer before the service is bought.
  • Identity — the barcode that ties the record to the order, so the measurement lands on the right shipment and the right customer account.
Nominal packaging data — the printed size of the empty box — is the most common source of systematic under-declaration. A package dimensioner measures the packed, sealed, labelled object, which is the only version the carrier ever sees.

03Choosing the package measuring point

Start with the flow. If packages are packed and labelled at benches, put the dimensioner at the bench: the GS210B desktop unit for compact stations, the GS210Y static workstation where the bench handles larger cartons or returns work as well. If packages arrive already packed — from a production line, a co-packer or a returns stream — measure them at induction, statically for modest volumes or with a dynamic DWS when the stream runs on a belt.

Either way the record is the same, and it compounds: a quarter of package records is a dataset that tells you which boxes to stock, which products ship air, and where your packaging costs actually sit.

FAQQuestions buyers ask

Package dimensioner vs parcel dimensioner — is there a difference?
In this range, no: the terms are used interchangeably in the industry. We organise the machines under parcel dimensioner and use this page for the small-package measuring points specifically.
Can it measure polybags and soft packages?
Vision measurement captures the bounding box of the package as it sits. Soft packages are measured in their packed state — the same state the carrier measures — rather than by the flat dimensions of the empty bag.
Does it help choose packaging?
Yes, over time: the record shows the real size distribution of what you ship, which is the data that box rationalisation and right-sizing projects run on.
